Sports injuries are becoming more and more common especially as sports have developed into extremely physically demanding activities that push our bodies to their limits!
Osteopathy is used to both treat and prevent sports injuries. Making sure the bodies joints have a full range of motion prepares them for the physical stresses and strains sustained during sport.
After injuries have occured muscles can tighten around joints and tissue adhesions begin to develop due to lack of movement of the injured joint. Gentle mobilisations, stretching and soft tissue techniques can help the muscles and other tissues recover. The cause of an injury to one joint may have been due to a lack of movement in an adjacent joint. It is essential that both joints are treated to help prevent a reoccurence of the injury. During the early stages after an injury the joint may be too painfull to work on. This is a good time to work on the adjacent joints to provide the optimum support around the injured area for a full recovery.
